Foxen 7200 ‘Little Bird’ 2010

HAPPY CANYON OF SANTA BARBARA | CALIFORNIA | $42
A blueberry and boysenberry crush, with notes of cocoa, graphite, tarragon and orange zest. Medium to full bodied, well integrated and, to a small degree, gamey, with a satiny, slightly laden mouth feel and a lingering, satisfying finish. Rather agile, and surprisingly so, as the initial encounter conveys a weightiness that portends clumsiness — and yet this image rapidly vanishes revealing a complex, sublime soul. Merlin Olsen. 60% Merlot, 40% Petit Verdot. A very good wine. (Reviewed 2/2/13)

L’Aventure ‘le Grand Verdot’ 2008

PASO ROBLES | CALIFORNIA | $75

Intense, concentrated blackberry and blueberry fruit supported by firm tannin structure that renders unnoticed a very high 15.9% alcohol. Complex notes of bay, cola, loam and chalk come through over a satisfying suede-like texture. Woody tannins combine with a pop of natural fruit acidity on the finish. Suave and rugged, this bloke out-charms and out-muscles his rivals. Petite Verdot with Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. An excellent wine.(Reviewed 1/15/11)

L’Aventure ‘Le Grand Verdot’ 2010

PASO ROBLES | CALIFORNIA | $75

Concentrated dark berries with plum, chalk and violets. Notes of forest floor, cedar and a hint of wild game tease interest. Focused and complex, integrating lush fruit with firm structure. Regal and in control, yet there’s suppleness at play. She is the Queen, you know, maneuvering her Range Rover through the outreaches of the country estate, her affectionate hounds along for the ride. 70% Petit Verdot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Syrah. An excellent wine. (Reviewed 3/3/12)
